Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hard surfaces

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev secured his maiden title for nearly 30 months with success over Corentin Moutet in the tournament championship match.

The Russian, a ex- world number one, has had a difficult year, managing just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

His varied form on the ATP Tour - and difficulties with his serve in particular - led to him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally separating with long-time trainer his previous coach.

Currently collaborating with his coach and Goetzke, the tennis star has steadily progressed in the recent weeks - culminating in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents his first championship after the Italian tournament and first on a hard court from spring of that year.

Success also means he has won twenty-one championships at twenty-one different events.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children at once, so to get a trophy is really nice," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my child her name was delivered was for her."

The athlete, the former major winner, had failed in his past six title deciders, featuring in that event earlier this year.

His retrieving approach and frequent reactions on the playing surface had caused observers to wonder if his capacity to play at the highest level was over.

However the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, striving to approach the net and play aggressively, backed up by an improved serve.

The champion came back from a deficit in the first set against the difficult Moutet, taking four of the concluding five points to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged break points in the following set before Moutet, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to force a final set.

Moutet defended 4 early-game break points in a tight third set before Medvedev won the break to fifteen to close out the victory.

Fittingly, the winner secured the title with a shot at the net, with his opponent unable to handle a return after a lengthy match.
